snowstorm

there are many things that are kinetic energy, some that draw me down
like clay mud near the Colorado river in the spring
caking ankles with a gray crust
saddening every footstep until the
suck of your own motions clouds
your ears with shtuck shmuck

packs of dogs that run in the moonlight
their claws scraping away dust that covers the bedrock
they run and hunt as the moon sets red through their dust

There are strangers (no more) who clog terminals in December blizzards, exchanging names, numbers, tired and exasperated glances and they say goodbye even though they
never expected to say hello.
This is their fraternity: of an inconvenience, and the unexpected beauty
of machines throwing arching rainbows whiter, farther than should be real.

snow that covers everything with quiet
stops traffic
commerce
spreading light around
one trillion faces
tiny moons on our lashes
and under our boots.

and the pull us in their one trillion tides into winter
into sleep under heavy
and silent blankets. Under them
we are acquainted with ourselves again, our bodies,
our skin in the cold with our still
inner knowledge – what we are doing
what is killing
what is fulfilling,
and which one we think is more dangerous
